We chose to end this preface with Baron’s description of her protagonist
at the pick moment of her journey from Broken Worlds into Perfection
and Prosperity:
A wide apron with many folds, was strapped around her, as customary
among the women carrying the burden of motherhood, and her face,
framed by a colorful shawl, illuminatedwith the light of the underprivileged
whose imperfect existence has been repaired – like an empty lantern fixed
with a lit candle. And those who saw her descending into the ravine to
pursue her charitable acts, wrapped in a sweater of the affluent, and her
gait with practically no trace of a limp, wondered: is that Chaya-Fruma?
And they did not know that even the salty desert land, were it only
to be washed and fertilized, and saturated with fresh spring water,
will ultimately improve and start producing plants (Devorah Baron,
“Sunbeams” (Shavririm)).

We wish our readers a pleasant and educational reading that will purify
and fertilize their conscience and their mind, will touch the fragile places
and ultimately lead to action and growth.
