Sometimes the word “fracture” is enough in itself to flood one’s body and
soul with pain. In this issue of Et Hasadeh we delve into the concept of
breakage or fracture, the intensity of the pain involved, the implications of
mending the fracture and even its power. The articles lead us to the point
of fracture– the place where a family breaks apart, where childhood halts,
where a community breaks down; to the cracks appearing in the broken
community texture, to the challenges of treating brokenness as well as
to the place where the fracture becomes a source of empowerment and
revival – “a season of transition “.
Sometimes our pliable and experienced human soul does not linger on the
fracture site. “Maybe it is just a minor passing crisis”, we say in the words
of Israeli singer Arik Einstein, and together with him attempt to skip the
fracture, minimize it, pass by it or jump over it so as not to wallow in pain
or touch it. In this issue we try to look into the worlds that interface with
pain, to hear the sound of the fracture, to embrace, encompass and listen
to it and ultimately “bring it to a place where it can be dressed “and “put
in writing”.
…Three days his memory haunted me.
And on the fourth I cut the bread
And on the fourth I opened the window
And on the fourth I saw the sea.
And on the fourth I knew
The sea was beautiful and blue
and in the salty breeze
The scent of waves
But not the taste of tears.
