Large Japanese corporations sometimes find it difficult to take big risks and invest large sums of money in development of highly innovative, yet risky, technologies. Joining forces with Israeli startups allows the Japanese company to connect with Israeli innovationwhile limiting risks associated with internal development. What is your expectation for the Israel-Japan economic relations? Since 2014 , there has been a continuous improvement in economic relations between the countries. According to recent data, 2021 was a record year, with Japanese investments amounting to approx. $ 3 billion in Israeli companies. We anticipate that this process will continue due to the need for technological innovation in Japan and common interests in the fields of security and cyber. Expansion into new fields and enhancing collaborations in existing fields is also expected. What Japanese investors need to know? Investing in an Israeli startup is not complex froma legal perspective, and it resembles the process of investing in a U.S. startup. Foreign direct investments are generally not restricted, and there is no need to obtain a regulatory license to invest nor an obligation to establish a local entity in Israel for that purpose. There are some exceptions in areas such as security, capital markets, and national infrastructure. However, there are cultural differences, and Israeli law is different from Japanese law. This is particularly reflected in areas such IP, tax, and government grants.
