A s OEMs race to integrate next-generation ADAS functionality – and eventually full autonomy – into software-defined vehicles, they are facedwith the challenges presented by existing connectivity solutions and legacy automotive architectures that have been stretched to their technological limits. OEMsmust figure out how to distribute massive amounts of data generated from high-resolution cameras, lowangular resolution radars, and high framerate LiDARs. Many are realizing the need to transition from proprietary, analog-based connectivity to standardized, digital solutions that can handle these newdata-intensive requirements. MIPI A-PHY: The first standard for long- range sensor connectivity The MIPI Alliance – the IP-owner of the Camera Serial Interface (MIPI CSI- 2 ®) and Display Serial Interface (MIPI DSI- 2 SM ) interfaces widely used in the industry – released the A-PHY standard in response to strong demand from the automotive community. The A-PHY standard is optimized for the implementation of high bandwidth, long-distance asymmetric links. The hardware-based solution provides an improved framework for software-driven applications through simplified cabling, more flexibility in the placement of sensors, better scalability and lower total system cost. Japanese endorsement of A-PHY Japanese companies have been early adopters of MIPI A-PHY technology. Sony Semiconductor Solutions is working on creating a camera sensor with integrated MIPI A-PHY, and Sumitomo Electric has announced that its off-the-shelf cables will comply with the A-PHY specification. JASPAR, the leading automotive organization in Japan, has already validatedMIPI A-PHY to its community of automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. The momentum for A-PHY is not just building in Japan, but all around the world, as companies from across the automotive value chain embrace the standard, including Tier 1 s such as Aptiv and Denso, camera and sensor vendors such as Omnivision, Leopard Imaging and Sunny Optical, SoC (system on chip) vendors such as Mobileye, systems and package vendors such as LG-Innotek, connector vendors such as Sumitomo, and test equipment vendors such as Keysight. Valens and A-PHY Valens’ VA 7000 chipset family is the first on the market to comply with the MIPI A-PHY standard. The chipsets will enable the automotive industry to remove costly and proprietary bridge CSI- 2 extension solutions widely used today, in favor of a Digital Signal Processing (DSP)-based standardized protocol that simplifies the vehicle’s connectivity infrastructure. The MIPI A-PHY standard is opening the floodgates of innovation for OEMs, enabling a standardized connectivitysolutionthat canhandle theultra-highbandwidth requirements of next-generation sensors and ECUs. Laying the foundation for next-generation vehicles with the MIPI A-PHY standard About Valens Semiconductor Valens Semiconductor pushes the boundaries of connectivity by enabling long-reach, high-speed video and data transmission for the Audio-Video and Automotive industries. Valens’ HDBaseT® technology is the leading standard in the Audio- Video market with tens of millions of Valens’ chipsets integrated into thousands of products in a wide range of applications. Valens Semiconductor’s Automotive chipsets are deployed in systems manufactured by leading customers and are on the road in vehicles around the world. Valens is a key enabler of the evolution of ADAS and autonomous driving and its advanced technology is the basis for the MIPI A-PHY industry standard for high-speed in-vehicle connectivity.
