Israeli innovation and creativity could provide solutions to many of
the vexing problems in several aspiring Indian Smart Cities
T
he innovative Smart Cities Mission
was launched by the Government of
India in June 2015.The Mission aims
to provide sustainable and inclusive cities
that offer core infrastructure and promise
a decent quality of life to its citizens. The
selection process of Smart Cities is based
on the principles of Competitive and Co-
operative Federalism through a two-stage
filtering process.
In January 2016,20 Smart Cities were selected
in Round 1 and 13more were selected inMay
2016 in a fast-track round.Later,in September
2016,another 27 Smart Cities were selected.
The 20 cities selected in Round 1 have
incorporated a Special Purpose Vehicle at
the city level.15 out of them have engaged
Project Management Consultants and Project
Management Units for implementing their
respective plans.The total capital cost of the
proposed projects in the Smart City Proposals
of the 20 winning cities is to the tune of
USD 7 billion.
Tel Aviv as a leading example
There is a lot of business potential in the
India-Israel partnership on Smart Cities.Israel
has many 'smart' initiatives in various fields
like Energy, Transportation, Environmental
protection, Water & Agriculture, etc., all of
which are essential components of the Smart
Cities programme. Israeli innovation and
creativity could provide solutions to many
of the vexing problems in several aspiring
Indian Smart Cities.
Tel Aviv is an internationally acclaimed Smart
City. It is a leading technology hub that
developed highly advanced solutions for
urban administration and,notably,increased its
citizen engagement and public participation.
One of the main contributors to Tel Aviv’s
accomplishments is a digital revolution
named“Digi-Tel”– a digital platformenabling
advanced solutions for urban administration
and residents’ engagement. This idea was
Smart Cities Mission offers core infrastructure and quality of life.
Israel can offer its proven solutions to many Indian cities

also implemented in India as "Digi-Thane"
and is already running successfully.
ThoughTel Aviv may be the leading example,
there are several other possible modes of
partnerships between India and Israel in
this domain. Such collaborations have the
potential of bringing about awin-win situation
for both countries.
