ndia and Israel have been partnering on sharing of best practices,
capacity building and technology transfer in agriculture focusing
on horticulture mechanization,protected cultivation,orchards,
canopy and nursery management, micro-irrigation and post-
harvest management. Israel has a proven edge over advanced
technologies in addressing common challenges in agriculture
such as productivity, efficient use of natural resources, income and
livelihood opportunities for the farmers and food security at large.
Israel is a world leader in technologies related to irrigation;
automated dairy chain management; water management; and
farm development. It is the world’s leading country in water
recycling with a 80 percent water recycling rate.Advanced water
management and treatment practices helped recycle 44 percent
of the water used in agriculture.
Its gravity-based drip irrigation systems together with advanced
temperature and humidity control methods have helped create
healthy environments for poultry, flowers and off-season vegetables.
Israel ranks first in crop yield per unit of water.
Israel has developed automatedmilking and dairy herdmanagement
systems and egg-collecting equipment, computerized feeding
systems for cattle and production recording computers that have
helped reach record yield in milk production.
Indian agriculture has diversified and the contribution of high
value commodities to the total value added in agriculture
and allied sectors is more than that of traditional grains. With
this rising share, challenges related to on-farm production,
post-harvest management and supply chain management need
to be addressed. Also, the increasing soil and water stress resulting
from intensification of farming need to be contained and hence
precision technologies that allowoptimal use of water and, improves
soil health through reduced use of agro chemicals will increasingly
replace traditional practices.
India-Israel Partnership
The India-Israel Partnership began in 2008 at a G2G level through
the Indo-Israeli Agricultural Cooperation Project that sought sharing
of Israel best practices and knowhow, and capacity building in
agriculture. MASHAV (Centre for International Cooperation of
Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and CINADCO (Centre for
International Agriculture Development Cooperation of Israel’s
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) in partnership with
National Horticulture Mission,Government of India set up centres
of excellence - Karnal,Haryana (Vegetables);Ratnagiri,Maharashtra
(Mango); Akola, Maharashtra (Citrus); and Rahuri, Maharashtra
(Pomegranate). Both countries have been collaborating at the
academic and business levels respectively focusing on capacity
building, sharing of best practices and more recently, exploring
opportunities for technology transfer.
