A
ccording to the U.N.700 million people in 43 countries suffer
fromwater scarcity today.By 2030 half the world’s population
will be living in areas of high water stress.Population growth,
urbanization, the rising standard of living and climate change have
contributed to bring this about.
Wise, or ‘efficient’ use of water is far from reality in most parts of
the world. In India, for example, there is a relatively large amount of
water supply, but problematic management or resources. About
330 million people face acute water shortage. Nearly two-thirds
of land under cultivation has no irrigation and so relies on rainfall.
The answer is technology that can bring relief in a number of areas:
urban water systems, water for agriculture, wastewater treatment,
water use in industry and more. Technology has leapfrogged: Big
Data and the Internet of Things (IoT) are making possible collation
of immense amounts of data and information and has reduced
decision-making in Water Management in real-time.
